Most of us believe that an SOS! Alert signifies imminent danger. That is exactly the type of danger that the handicapper faces in the next several weeks when he is facing skewed numbers as a result of an SOS (STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE)differential. The month of September is a time when some teams devour cupcakes, while other coaches are looking to harden their team by scheduling more challenging opponents. This can result in skewed numbers as teams playing an easy schedule can amass phony numbers, while teams playing an upgraded schedule may have numbers that belie their abilities. Being aware of these SOS differentials in your handicapping can be most critical when assessing whether their AFP (away from pointspread) is faux or fo’ real. In the weeks ahead, I will be incorporating the SOS language in my analysis. Now you will know the concept to which I refer!
